Liposuction can be used to slim the flanks (ie. ‘love handle’ regions), thighs and buttocks, flatten the abdomen, contour the arms and back, shape the knees, calves and ankles or eliminate a double chin. Men of all ages may benefit from this procedure. Ideal candidates for liposuction are within 30% of their ideal body weight and have good skin elasticity.

Performed either separately or in combination, ‘Mommy makeovers’ include a variety of procedures designed to optimally enhance breast and abdominal/torso contours and proportions following childbirth. Typically, these procedures include a breast lift (or mastopexy), breast augmentation, abdominoplasty (or tummy tuck), liposuction, belly button hernia repair, and stem cell enriched autologous fat transfer. Of course, the most appropriate combination of these multiple procedures for any given woman varies between individuals and is best determined during a consultation with a board certified plastic surgeon.

Stem cells are naturally-occurring cells in our bodies that are considered ‘pluripotential.’ That is, they have the potential to develop into a wide a variety of different tissue types, depending on the cellular environment into which they’re introduced. This is achieved by gently removing fat cells from one area of the body by liposuction. These cells are then processed using a centrifuge, thereby concentrating the stem cells. These stem cell enriched fat cells can then be reintroduced into other body areas where they are deficient, including, most commonly, the face, hands, breast or buttocks, restoring volume and rejuvenating areas from which volume has been lost.

After researching the “enhanced” liposuction device market for several years, Dr Kimmel is convinced, “Tickle Lipo offers significant advantages for my patients compared with any other liposuction technology.” Nutational Infrasonic Liposculpture (NIL), commonly referred to as ‘Tickle” Liposculpture, is a revolutionary, FDA approved device, which utilizes an air pressure powered cannula (tiny metal tube) to create a patented triple motion of piston-like micro oscillation, rotation and vibration. This unique whirling motion removes fat more efficiently than other techniques, while preserving and respecting surrounding critical non-fatty tissues. This allows precise body sculpting with less trauma. Since the fat extracted during this procedure is handled gently, individual fat cells can be preserved and remain viable for use in any additional fat transfer procedures, which might be performed simultaneously.

By removing variable amounts of excess abdominal skin and fat as well as tightening bulging or weakened abdominal muscle, abdominoplasty is a powerful surgical technique which can restore a flatter, tighter abdominal contour. Excellent candidates for this procedure include individuals who have developed relatively lax, redundant abdominal skin as a result of significant weight loss, weakened abdominal muscles as a result of previous pregnancy, or excess abdominal protrusion which is disproportionate to the remainder of their body. For those with an unsatisfactory abdominal contour which is restricted to the lower abdomen (ie. below the navel), a ‘mini-abdominoplasty’ procedure may provide optimal enhancement. Usually performed under general anesthesia, a tummy tuck is safely performed in a State Licensed, Nationally Accredited Ambulatory Surgical Facility (see ‘about Keystone Surgery Center’) on an outpatient basis requiring approximately 2 to 4 hours of operative time. Depending on lifestyle demands, most individuals can comfortably return to their routine activities in 10 to 14 days.
Performed on an outpatient basis in a State Licensed, Nationally Accredited Ambulatory Surgical Facility (see ‘about Keystone Surgery Center’), an arm lift involves the removal of excess, lax skin and associated fatty tissue. Additionally, reduction in arm circumference and creation of a smooth contour transition with the adjacent areas is commonly achieved with liposuction techniques. This procedure typically requires approximately 2 -3 hours of operative time and is comfortably performed under intravenous sedation supplemented with local anesthesia. Optimal skin re-draping and contour recreation is facilitated by the use of a compression garment post-operatively. For most individuals, return to routine pre-operative activities following an arm lift is possible in about 5 to 7 days.
Link: Arm Lift (Brachioplasty)
Lower body lifts are a group of surgical procedures performed to enhance the contour about the thighs, hips, buttocks and lower back. These procedures are typically necessary in situations where there is excess, lax tissue present as a result of significant weight loss as may occur following gastric bypass surgery. Lower body lifts involve the removal of various amounts of skin and fat with advancement or “lifting” of the adjacent tissue in order to restore an optimal smooth, flat contour in the area of treatment. Supplemental liposuction is frequently performed in order to improve the uniformity of fatty tissue thickness and enhance the transition to the adjacent areas. These procedures are typically performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis in a, State Licensed, Nationally Accredited Ambulatory Surgical Facility (see ‘about Keystone Surgery Center’) . Operative and post-operative recovery times vary based on the extent of the original contour deformity. However, most patients can comfortably return to routine daily activities about two weeks following surgery. Skin re-draping and contour restoration is facilitated by the use of a compression garment following surgery.

Fat transfer, also called autologous fat injection, plumps up facial features and smoothes out wrinkles using a patient’s own fat. A popular alternative to other wrinkle treatments such as collagen injections, fat transfer to the face is a safe, natural, procedure designed to improve facial contours. Since fat transfer uses your own fat cells, allergic reactions do not occur. With autologous fat injection it is possible to have fat removed via liposuction from your thighs and/or abdomen and then transferred to another area of your body. This may be particularly advantageous when larger volumes of “filler” are needed. Harvesting the fat cells for re-injection is often performed in conjunction with other procedures, such as liposuction, tummy tuck or cosmetic breast surgery, and can be used for injection at the same time as these other procedures.

Frustrated with the presence of excess waist, belly or other body fat, but hesitant or unable to consider liposuction? Tired of spending hours in the gym with little or no improvement in those “problem” areas? Embarrassed by the extra ‘love handle’ or ‘muffin top’ picking out of the top of your pants? If you can “pinch an inch” of fat, then we have the perfect solution for you. It is called Liposonix®.

Although loss of hair is most commonly seen in men, this process may also affect women. In fact, an estimated one in five women will suffer from some form of hair loss. However, in contrast to male pattern balding, women tend to experience a more widely-distributed, subtle progressive thinning affecting most or all of the areas of the scalp. For some individuals, hair loss is viewed as an acceptable part of the normal aging process and they adapt appropriately to their maturing hairline. However, others may be dissatisfied with their changing appearance and unwilling to passively accept progressive hair loss. For these patients, hair restoration may provide the perfect solution.
Waxing is a temporary hair removal process that removes the hair from the root. This process involves applying wax directly to the skin and then removing the wax and hair. This is a safe and effective method of removing unwanted facial and body hair. Waxing results can last for as long as four to six weeks.

Breast enhancement, also known as breast augmentation, is a cosmetic surgical procedure in which implants, made of a soft silicone shell and filled with either sterile salt water solution or silicone gel, are placed behind the breasts to enhance their size and shape.
Link: Breast Augmentation
Many women experience frustration with the progressive descent of their breast tissue, complaining of ‘drooping’ or ‘sagging’ breasts. This may result from previous pregnancy, weight loss or the aging process. For these patients, breast lift, or mastopexy, can be performed in order to elevate and reestablish an appropriate breast position.
Link: Breast Lift
Because of the number, variability and complexity of the issues that may contribute to create pronounced breast asymmetry, there is no one specific surgery that is invariably performed for each of these patients. Instead, what is typically required in treating such patients is the selective use of multiple breast surgical techniques including, but not limited to, breast augmentation, breast reduction, breast lifting and breast reconstruction. Moreover, these techniques are applied differently with respect to each breast in order to reestablish breast symmetry with respect to size, shape and position.
By removing excess breast tissue and skin in proper proportions, breast reduction surgery allows precise reestablishment of appropriate breast position, creating breasts which are smaller, firmer, uplifted and in enhanced proportion to the remainder of the body.
Link: Breast Reduction
Although a wide variety of post-mastectomy breast reconstruction techniques exist, they can be broadly divided into two categories: autogenous and prosthetic. Autogenous breast reconstruction involves the use of a patient’s own tissue to reconstruct a breast mound, whereas prosthetic reconstruction involves the use of tissue expanders and implants for breast mound reconstruction.
Gynecomastia is a medical term used to describe enlarged breasts in male patients. This condition is actually quite common, affecting up to 40 to 60 percent of adolescent males during their pubertal development and may affect either one or both breasts. Performed under general anesthesia as an outpatient procedure at a State Licensed, Nationally Accredited Ambulatory Surgery Center, gynecomastia excision involves the removal of excess glandular and fatty tissue from the breasts in order to reestablish an optimal male chest wall contour.

The development of excess fat and drooping skin of the upper eyelids or “bags” or dark circles of the lower eyelids are a significant source of concern for many individuals. Performed under intravenous sedation anesthesia in a State Licensed, Nationally Accredited Ambulatory Surgery Center, combined upper and lower blepharoplasty lasts approximately 2 hours and patients are able to return home afterwards.
A facelift improves the most visible signs of aging by removing excess facial skin and fat and tightening underlying muscles. It smoothes and tightens the skin and soft tissue of the face and neck, defines the jaw line, firms the sagging loose skin on the cheeks and softens the deep lines from the nose to the corners of the mouth.
Link: Face Lift
Rhinoplasty surgery can enhance the shape, size, and overall appearance of the nose, creating a more balanced look in harmony with the rest of the face. Rhinoplasty surgery can enhance the shape, size, and overall appearance of the nose, creating a more balanced look in harmony with the rest of the face.
A lip lift is a cosmetic procedure that corrects this aging appearance by shortening the distance between the upper lip margin and base of the nose, allowing for more visibility of the upper teeth when the lips are in a relaxed, slightly separated position. It also creates additional upper central lip fullness by rotating it upward and outward and can restore improved lip balance in individuals with comparatively thin upper lips. Performed as a brief outpatient procedure under local anesthesia in a State Licensed, Nationally Accredited Ambulatory Surgical Facility, a lip lift involves a tiny incision placed within the natural crease just beneath the base of the nose to precisely elevate and reposition the upper lip.
Link: Lip Lift
Performed using a mild local or topical anesthetic, lip enhancement is most commonly performed in an office setting using injectable fillers such as Juvederm®, Restylane® or Collagen. Alternatively, if performed in conjunction with other procedures such as liposuction, lip augmentation may be done by replacing lost volume with a patient’s own fat, known as ‘autologous fat’ injection.
Link: Lip Augmentation
A neck lift is required to remove excess, loose neck skin while platysmal tightening is necessary to reinforce lax neck muscle. These procedures are performed on an outpatient basis in a State Licensed, Nationally Accredited Ambulatory Surgical Facility under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation.
Link: Neck Lift/Liposuction
Thread lifting or suture suspension lifting represents an ideal minimally invasive alternative to traditional forehead, face and/or neck lifting procedures for those requiring less aggressive treatment or seeking a procedure that demands less recovery time. Performed under local anesthesia with or without supplemental intravenous sedation, thread lifting involves the passage of specialized suture material within the deep tissue to elevate and re-suspend eyebrows, cheeks, jowls or re-establish a crisp neck angle.

The placement of facial implants represents a technique for the enhancement of facial shape, balance and symmetry. Following a careful pre-operative facial assessment including precise measurements and radiologic evaluation, appropriate implants are selected for facial enhancement. Employing a brief general or intravenous sedation anesthetic,State Licensed, Nationally Accredited Ambulatory Surgical Facility, these implants can then be precisely placed to augment a receding chin, add prominence to cheekbones or reshape a “weak” jawline. In addition to cosmetic enhancement of facial features, implants can also be employed to correct certain congenital (or birth) defects or reconstruct facial features following traumatic injury or tumor removal.

Dermabrasion is a procedure employed to enhance the skin surface by improving or eliminating contour irregularities. Performed on as outpatient basis, using a local anesthetic in combination with intravenous sedation,State Licensed, Nationally Accredited Ambulatory Surgical Facility, (see ‘about Keystone Surgery Center’) Dermabrasion involves the use of a power skin dermabrader or “sanding wheel” device to gently strip away excess unwanted skin cells, thereby improving deep or concentrated wrinkles, chronic acne scarring or skin surface irregularities resulting from prior injury. Dermabrasion is particularly useful for correcting contour irregularities in the area of the cheeks and around the mouth.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is a disorder which causes tingling, numbness and dull aches in the hand and thumb through ring fingers and is the most common site for upper extremity nerve compression (termed compression neuropathy). The procedure performed to correct this, termed carpal tunnel release, involves division of a thickened ligament compressing the median nerve at the base of the palm causing dramatic relief of symptoms.

Traumatic Injury, which may involve damage to any of the tissues of the hand, including: bones, joints, tendons, nerves, blood vessels, or skin. Correction of these injuries involves a broad application of a variety of surgical technique, including possible microsurgery.
Congenital (or Birth) Deformities, the most common of which is syndactyly, in which two or more fingers are fused together at birth. Since hand surgery is performed primarily to correct physical abnormalities and maintain or restore function, it is considered ‘reconstructive’ in nature and therefore as a ‘covered’ procedure by most health insurance plans.
Ganglion cysts are “balloon-shaped” out-pouchings arising from joints or tendon sheaths of the hand, filled with a clear, thick, gelatinous material, known as synovial fluid. They may cause pain, limit range of motion or be complicated by infection. They are frequently associated with arthritis or “bone spur” formation. Surgical removal of ganglion cysts and any associated causative “bone spurs” results in symptomatic relief while minimizing their chance of recurrence.

Dupuytren’s Contracture, is a disorder of the tissue between the tendons and the overlying skin on the palmar side of the hand. In its more advanced stages, this tissue may thicken, shorten and tighten causing abnormal bending or ‘contracture’ across the affected joints. In certain situations, this can be treated by the direct injection of a substance known as Xiaflex®, an enzyme which dissolves the unwanted contracture bands. In conjunction with splints and physical therapy, this allows recovery of finger extension and range of motion. Alternatively, with more advanced contractions, corrective surgery is performed to remove these thickened tissue bands, freeing the tendons and joints, thereby allowing improved finger motion.
There is no single technique that is universally applied in the reconstruction of wounds resulting from trauma or burns. On the contrary, trauma and burn wounds require careful evaluation to insure correct diagnosis and optimal treatment. Drawing on their extensive and diverse training, plastic surgeons are uniquely qualified to provide accurate wound assessment and then formulate a specific, detailed treatment plan for each individual patient. This plan will typically take into consideration the patient’s general health characteristics (including age and pre-existing medical conditions) as well as specific factors relating to the wound such as location, depth and any functional tissues which have become exposed or damaged.
By in large, the primary treatment of skin cancer is surgical. However, radiation therapy and chemotherapy may have a role in the management of skin cancer in certain situations. Overall, there are 2 goals in the surgical management of skin cancers. The first is the complete removal of all skin cancer cells, as judged by microscopic verification of the absence of cancer cells at the edge of the surgical specimen. The second goal is the successful reconstruction of the defect resulting from skin cancer excision.
The management of eyelid malposition invariably begins with a detailed patient history and physical examination, including general patient characteristics (such as age, coexisting medical illnesses and medication usage) as well as specific characteristics related to the malposition, including timing of onset, extent or degree of malposition and basis for its occurrence. Based upon this comprehensive assessment, your plastic surgeon will then formulate a rational treatment plan for reconstruction of your eyelid. Although there is no single treatment which is universally applied in eyelid reconstruction, surgical techniques include local or distant tissue transfer (or ‘flap’) procedures, muscle advancement or ‘gathering’ procedures or the use of simple or composite (ie. ‘multi-layer’) grafts.
Link: Eyelid Reconstruction
The management of scar deformities invariably begins with a detailed patient history and physical examination, including general patient characterizations (such as age, coexisting medical illnesses and medication usage) as well as specific characteristics related to the scarring (including scar location, dimensions, orientation and mechanism of its creation). Based upon this comprehensive assessment, your plastic surgeon will then formulate a rational treatment plan. Although there is no single technique which is universally applied in the treatment of undesirable scarring, your treatment may range from non-invasive (eg. use of topical agents, anti-scar gel patches or ultrasound) to minimally invasive (eg. steroid injections) to surgical scar revision (eg. scar excision with local tissue rearrangement or skin graft application).

Due to their extensive training and background in the management of difficult or complex wounds, plastic surgeons are frequently called upon to evaluate and treat non-healing ulcers and wounds, particularly those which have not responded to initial, reasonable attempts at wound care. These difficult wounds may arise in a vast array of settings and as a result of many different mechanisms. Patient risk factors for such wounds include neurologic disease or debility, arterial or venous vascular disease, diabetes mellitus, history of radiation exposure or proximity to a previous burn or surgical site.

In order to treat unwanted symptoms or possibly exclude a diagnosis of skin cancer, your physician may recommend a biopsy of your lesion in which tissue cells from the growth are specially prepared for evaluation under a microscope. The biopsy may involve removal of the entire growth (ie. excisional biopsy) or just a portion of it (ie. incisional biopsy). Whichever technique is employed, a biopsy provides useful diagnostic information and, in some situations, indicates the need for additional, perhaps more extensive, surgical management.

Performed under local anesthesia with oral sedation as an outpatient procedure in a State Licensed, Nationally Accredited Ambulatory Surgery Center (see ‘about Keystone Surgery Center’), follicular unit hair restoration involves removal of a thin strip of hair-bearing scalp from the back of one’s head (occipital region). This hair ‘donor site’ is then immediately closed, forming a fine line scar, concealed by the surrounding hair and completely imperceptible. The hair within this harvested strip of tissue is then carefully, microsurgically separated into its component hair follicles by a skilled medical team. Under magnification, these follicular units are then inserted into small puncture sites within the area of hair loss. Throughout this procedure, patients remain awake and comfortable, generally watching their favorite television programs. The results of follicular unit hair transplantation can be further enhanced by the use of oral (eg. Finasteride) and/or topical (eg. Minoxodil) agents to minimize genetically programmed ongoing hair loss and support and stabilize grafted hair follicles.

Gynecomastia is a medical term used to describe enlarged breasts in male patients. This condition is actually quite common, affecting up to 40 to 60 percent of adolescent males during their pubertal development and may affect either one or both breasts. However, most cases of adolescent gynecomastia resolve spontaneously with the transition to adulthood. For those males with persistent post-pubertal gynecomastia, surgical removal of excess breast tissue is appropriate.

Juvederm®, Belotero®, or Restylane® are safe, natural, FDA approved, unique calcium-based microspheres suspended in a natural gel known as hyaluronic acid. This material is normally found between skin cells in the human body and typically degrades over time due to the effects of gravity, aging and environmental damage. By injecting Juvederm®, Belotero®, or Restylane® into the skin in small amounts, this lost substance is replaced, thereby rejuvenating tissue by adding volume to lips and reducing wrinkles or folds.
Radiesse® is a safe, FDA-approved injectable filler composed of unique calcium-based microspheres suspended in a natural gel. When injected into the skin, these microspheres form a natural “scaffold” to support and stimulate the growth of your own collagen, resulting in correction of facial folds which may last up to a year or more. In addition, Radiesse® can also be used to restore lost facial volume or enhance contours in certain areas such as the chin or nasal bridge.

Sculptra® Aesthetic is a unique, FDA-approved injectable product which targets the underlying causes of the signs of facial aging. Following injection into the deep layer of the skin, Sculptra® Aesthetic begins to reinforce the skin’s structure by stimulating the regeneration of collagen lost during the aging process. Sculptra® Aesthetic is primarily compounded of poly-L-lactic acid (or PLLA), a totally synthetic, biocompatible material containing no human or animal-derived substances. In fact, PLLA is fully biodegradeable in the human body and has been in widespread use for more that 25 years in dissolvable stitches and medical implants.

Collagen implants are natural products derived from highly purified bovine collagen that is injected just under the surface of the skin. Collagen is actually part of the natural support structure of your skin. Wrinkles form when this natural collagen thins or degrades over time. This loss correlates with such factors as aging, sun exposure, contact with environmental pollutants, overall health, heredity and lifestyle. Collagen injections create a more youthful appearance by reducing wrinkles and folds, enhancing facial contours, replacing volume lost in areas such as the lips and even minimizing the appearance of scarring resulting from injury or acne.

The Thermage CPT® (or comfort pulse technology) procedure is a revolutionary technique that non-invasively reduces the signs of aging by smoothing and tightening skin of both the face and body, giving the skin a more youthful appearance. Using advanced radiofrequency energy technology, skin tightening is achieved without surgery or downtime in all skin types. While providing skin surface cooling, the penetrating energy of Thermage CPT® is drawn into the deeper levels of the skin to initiate the tightening process. Over time, the collagen in the lower layers of the skin restructures and rebuilds, causing further tightening of lax skin and flattening of undesirable folds. This collagen remodeling process continues over several months, resulting in the emergence of an enhanced, more youthful appearance. Extremely versatile, the Thermage CPT® device can be used on a multitude of areas, including forehead, face, neck, eyelids, stomachs, knees, legs, arms, and hands.

Varicose veins can be successfully treated with a procedure known as sclerotherapy in which the affected veins are injected with a solution that causes them to collapse and fade from view. The procedure is variable in length (depending on the severity and number of varicose veins), and is comfortably performed in an office setting using a mild topical anesthetic cream. The success of the treatment can be enhanced with the subsequent use of compression stockings. What emerges following sclerotherapy is a smoother skin surface without embarrassing raised, visible varicose veins.
Comfortably performed in an office setting, Liposonix® is a completely nonsurgical treatment that employs high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) to permanently destroy unwanted fat cells, leaving the overlying skin unharmed. The products of fat cell breakdown are then naturally cleared by your body, leaving you with a thinner, improved waistline, or other contour. In just a single Liposonix® treatment lasting an average of one hour, you will experience a reduction of one pant or dress size. That’s one treatment, lasting one hour to be one size smaller!

Simple, quick and painless, without any exposure to harmful radiation, your Visia® analysis involves a brief series of standardized facial photographs. This photographic data is then processed and analyzed with respect to six key criteria affecting skin health and appearance: wrinkles, spots, pores, evenness (color variation in skin tone), porphyrins (evidence of bacteria in pores) and UV spots (evidence of photo damage, typically from excessive sun exposure). The unique photographic profile created for your skin is then compared to a similar profile created on a large age, gender and ethnicity-matched sample population. This information then forms the basis for rational, problem-specific recommendations for products and procedures to optimize your skin health and appearance. Once created, this initial Visia® analysis serves as a baseline for future comparison studies in order to demonstrate and document progressive improvement in your skin parameters.
Microneedling, also known as collagen induction therapy (CIT) or percutaneous collagen induction (PCI), is a nonsurgical skin rejuvenation procedure that uses tiny needles to create microscopic punctures in the skin. At our office, we use the Eclipse MicroPen® with 12 needles. The procedure triggers collagen and elastin production, which improves the skin texture, tone, and uniformity of color. Through these micro-punctures we are also able to apply topical gels, creams, and serums that can penetrate the skin more efficiently, improving the outer layer of the skin. We can also add platelet rich plasma to the skin following your microneedling procedure for even more enhanced results.

Waxing is a temporary hair removal process that removes the hair from the root. This process involves applying wax directly to the skin and then removing the wax and hair. This is a safe and effective method of removing unwanted facial and body hair. Waxing results can last for as long as four to six weeks.
